What is Fibre Broadband?

Fibre Broadband is also referred to as ‘high-speed broadband’, ‘Gigabit broadband’ or ‘next generation broadband’.

High speed network

Full fibre broadband offers much higher speeds, and the good news is it’s future-proofed, with speeds upto 2Gbps today, increasing to 10Gbs (which is more than you will ever need), using the same physical connection.

For home and businesses

Say goodbye to sluggish speeds and say hello to lightning-fast broadband that will cater to the needs of you, your family, and your business.

All across the nation

We are building our full fibre network across all 26 counties of Ireland. Today more than than 1.3 million homes and businesses can order our full fibre gigabit nework, making us the largest fasting growing network in Ireland.

How do I upgrade to fibre?

How to Upgrade

Upgrading to Fibre Broadband could not be easier. All you need to do is

  • Using our eircode checker, confirm that gigabit fibre is available.

  • Choose who you want to order from, we have 29 retail service providers who use our network to deliver broadband services such as Internet, TV & Voice.

  • Your service provider will confirm a date and time for installation that is suitable to you.

  • open eir on behalf of your chosen service provider will complete the installation.

What to expect on Installation Day

A full fibre gigabit connection requires a new physical connection to your home or business. To ensure a smooth installation process, we have provided some guidelines and helpful tips to prepare you.

  • Homes and businesses are either served overhead (pole to premises) or underground via ducts.

  • For properties served underground, it's important to check the existing duct on your property for blockages before the installation day.

  • If you rent your property you must have the landlord's permission for us to drill a small hole on the inside and outside of the building.

  • A decision maker over the age of 18 must be there throughout the whole appointment slot.

  • Please familiarise yourself with what to expect on installation day by watching our short video.

Getting the most from your fibre connection

Whether it’s streaming the latest must watch TV programmes, connecting multiple devices, downloading the latest music, working from home or keeping in touch with family and friends full fibre broadband has revolutionised the way we live our lives.

  • The best way to achieve the fastest possible speeds from your fibre broadband service is to connect your laptop or computer directly to your router, using an ethernet cable.

  • Sometimes, no matter how good your connection is, it can’t reliably cover your entire living space or business with a suitable Wi-Fi signal. In such cases, it may be best to purchase a mesh or powerline Wi-Fi system

  • If a household has a selection of devices, with a variety of Wi-Fi card specifications from low to high speed, the modem can default to the speed of the connected device with the slowest Wi-Fi card.

  • Thick walls, highly insulated walls, foil back plasterboard in walls and ceilings can inhibit theWi-Fi signal in a particular room or area in the house.

Can I buy fibre from open eir?

We build the fibre network, we complete the physical installation and we maintain the network, but you need to buy the connection or subscription from a retail service provider who bundles our network with their TV, Internet and Voice services. We partner with over 29 providers – so you have a lot to choose from.

How do you connect the fibre into my property?

We connect the fibre to your property either overhead or underground. If overhead, we'll run the cable from the nearest pole to where the old copper network entered your home. If underground, we'll access the existing ducting on your premises. If you don't have ducting, we can assist in setting it up. If the existing ducting is blocked, we can help clear it. Additional crews may be needed for this, and we'll discuss this with you beforehand. We have a short installation video which outlines what to expect on installation day (click here)

How long will it take to get connected?

Most installs are completed on the 1 st day, but occasionally challenges liked blocked ducts may arise, however we do hundreds of installations every day, we have trained crews and processes in place should an issue arise and we will ensure we keep you updated on next steps and progress.

How do I know if fibre is available in my area?

We are rolling out fibre to 1.9 million homes and businesses, today over 1.3 million homes and businesses can access our fibre network, to find out if your home is enabled yet, we have a simple eircode checker (here).

Can I still have a landline at home with Fibre

Absolutely. With fibre, your landline voice calls are transmitted digitally, in the same way as your broadband operates. To ensure a smooth transition from copper to fibre:

(a) Please inform your service provider if you wish to retain your current number.

(b) If you rely on a medical or security alarm, ensure compatibility with digital connections as older alarms using a copper landline may need to be upgraded. While most providers have already upgraded their services to accommodate digital setups, it's wise to double-check.
